How do I get security clearance?
First you need a sponsor. Individuals and companies cannot ask for a security clearance unless you are sponsored, and you will not be sponsored unless you are contracted (or are in the process of being contracted) to work on one or more specific MOD classified projects. What does each security clearance level mean?
Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) (formerly Basic Check (BC)) involve a check of identity documents and employment/education referees. These checks are normally completed by the recruitment authorities or by certain Defence industry companies. A BPSS is a prerequisite for the other security clearances noted below. On top of this, there is also an Enhanced Baseline Standard (EBS) (formerly Enhanced Basic Check (EBC)). This allows supervised access to top secret material. To attain this, the same checks as above apply, as well as a mandatory interview and references from people who are familiar with the person's character in both home and work environment. Counter-Terrorist Checks (CTC) include a BC and a check against national security records. A CTC allows access where there is a specific threat from terrorism to government establishments, but not to protectively marked assets. More information...
Security Checks (SC) are the most widely held security clearance for jobs involving long-term, frequent and uncontrolled access to SECRET assets and occasional and controlled access to TOP SECRET material. An SC involves a BC, plus checks against the UK criminal and security records (and if appropriate, of overseas countries) and a credit check. SCs are generally reviewed every ten years. Developed Vetting (DV) is needed for the most sensitive appointments and tasks, involving long-term and uncontrolled access to TOP SECRET. A DV is the most comprehensive form of UK security vetting and is made up of the above BC and SC checks plus:
-
the completion of a DV supplement questionnaire;
-
a financial check;
-
the checking of references in writing, by telephone or by interview from personal friends, tutors and employers as appropriate;
-
a detailed interview with the person needing the security clearance conducted by a vetting officer.
If you are DV cleared and think, either now or in the future, that your job does not involve the level of security clearance appropriate for a DV post, you should discuss this with your line manager, or discuss potential new security clearance jobs / DV posts with one of our recruitment consultants. DVs are first reviewed after five years and every seven years if there is a continuing need. More information... |
